Have you ever asked a child you work with, yourself, or someone else you care about this question? It doesn't get asked often. But we must ask it – especially those of us who work with young people every day. Because it impacts 1 in 7 children, and if the answer is yes, it has a profound impact on one’s life and hopes for the future. 5 million young people are being raised in homes with domestic violence today. This is CDV – Childhood Domestic Violence. This workshop will fully educate you about CDV and equip you with a unique toolkit of key resources you can take back with you to make a difference in these children’s lives and futures. Having just one caring adult can help foster resiliency and a single conversation is all it takes to change a life. But what does that really mean? It is time to go beyond the obvious and ask kids to really dig down into the reading. In this session teachers will work through the why and how to craft deep and meaningful questions using literacy or content area materials. Audience: Preschool through Grade 12 Teachers Format: Discussion-based, Interactive OCFS Licensing Areas: 1 B5 - CLOSED OUT Ain't Misbehaving Facilitated by Lenore Kahne Research has indicated a strong co-occurrence of communication disorders and behavioral/emotional disorders. As many as 50-70% of children with speech/language and communication disorders have diagnosable emotional or behavioral difficulties. This workshop will explore a variety of communication disorders and how the existence of these issues affect social competence and emotional development. The need for early identification/treatment is discussed and suggestions for dealing with children who present with language impairments will be offered. Audience: Toddler, Nursery, Pre-K Teachers Format: Lecture (Sit and Get) OCFS Licensing Areas: 1 B6 - CLOSED OUT Using Manipulatives and Technology to Teach Common Core Math Facilitated by Dr. Deborah Carter and Dr. Gary Dresser This workshop will involve hands-on activities to be used to instruct Common Core Mathematics in preschool through grade five. The activities will cover the use of manipulatives, websites, and apps. Participants will be given elementary student level problems to solve and encouraged to adapt those problems into lesson objectives. Come with your creative minds and plan to preserve and have fun as we challenge each other. Audience: Preschool - Grade 5 Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Math Teachers Format: Interactive, Hands-On, Tangible Take-Away OCFS Licensing Areas: 1 B7 - CANCELLED Moving Into the Future: Robotics and Engineering Facilitated by Lori Napoleon With over 15 years of experience in the field of classroom robotics, RoboFun has pioneered the use of LEGO® Robotics as a tool for students to explore and create while learning essential STEM skills. This interactive workshop will give you the opportunity to construct and program a LEGO® robot using NXT MindStorms kits. In addition, we will provide you with ideas and examples of how to integrate robotics into your curriculum so that you will return to your school armed with plans and enthusiasm to start a LEGO® robotics program. This workshop addresses STEM learning in hands-on, creative ways. Audience: Grades 3-8 teachers, Math teachers, Science teachers, Administrators Format: Interactive, Hands-On B8 Exploring the Possibilities of Collaborative Projects Facilitated by Tracey Gove and Kara Martone In this conference, we will share some of our collaborative projects both in our school and abroad. We will cover the tools that can facilitate collaboration, as well as the challenges that may arise. Conference participants will work together develop collaborative projects between the local Lutheran schools, as well as possibly with other schools around the country. Audience: Grades 6-12 teachers, Administrators Format: Lecture (Sit and Get), Discussion-based, Interactive, Hands-On B9 Visual Models: Rates, Ratios, and Proportions Facilitated by Elaine Zseller This workshop will focus on visual strategies used in the NYSED curriculum materials for teaching rates, ratios, and proportions. Audience: Grades 6-8 teachers, Math teachers Format: Discussion-based B10 The Socratic Seminar Facilitated by Jen Grene The Socratic Seminar is a discussion-based class that allows students to explore through questioning. This workshop will be modeled on the Socratic Seminar, and the topic discussed will be the concept of the Socratic Seminar. Step Up with SAMR Facilitated by David Black The SAMR model is designed to support student learning by providing educators with a model that measures their appropriate use of technology in this learning process. Learn about the SAMR model and how it applies to both your school and each individual educator, discussing activities that will help educators "step up" in their commitment to education excellence. Audience: Grades 3-12 teachers, Administrators Format: Lecture (Sit and Get), Discussion-based B12 Coding for All: Introducing Programming in Your School Facilitated by Chris Dragos In this workshop, participants will learn why coding is a valuable tool for today's students to learn. Particpants will be exposed to several coding programs that can be used with beginners. These programs include Scratch and Lightbot. This is a hands-on workshop where all participants will code a simple game. Participants will also discuss how to bring these programs and concepts back to their own schools and programs. Audience: Grades 3-12 teachers Format: Lecture (Sit and Get), Discussion-based, Hands-On, Tangible Take-Away B13 Checking the Pulse of Student and Staff Achievement Facilitated by Sashemani Elliott In a time where the goalpost in assessments in ever-changing, it is important for an administrator to convey to parents, staff and prospective families how they know students in their school are achieving. This workshop hopes to give administrators and other supervisors some ideas that can help them look at various data points and MRIs which we can respond to as opposed to autopsies. Audience: Administrators, Pastors, Board Members, Anyone in Supervisory Role Format: Discussion-based, Interactive, Hands-On, Tangible Take-Away OCFS Licensing Areas: 3 B14 Outdoor Learning in Community: Connecting Hands, Heads and Hearts (repeated session) Facilitated by Mark Ristine Our workshop will serve as an introduction to the Creation Learning Center curriculum offered at Koinonia, a Lutheran ministry located in Highland Lake, NY, and will offer some fresh ideas and approaches to environmental education. The workshop will showcase elements of our project-based, interactive and fun curriculum. We will highlight some of the experiences of students in recent years through visual media. We'll examine some our activities, including an easily adaptable lesson plan about Nest Building. The goal of this activity is to help students to think about the amazing ways that birds instinctively know how to build nests, that each species of bird builds a specific kind of nest and how God has equipped them with all of their needs. B15 Fulfilling Your Mission Is a Team Effort Facilitated by Marlene Lund In this interactive workshop we will experience various exercises to help build team spirit and leadership for mission. We'll look at what constitutes a good team and how different styles of leadership can be an asset when recognized. Use the same techniques as a teacher to build your classroom "team". Audience: All Format: Discussion-based, Interactive, Hands-On, Tangible Take-Away B16 Kitchen Chemistry Facilitated by Janet Hahn The workshop will show how you can use everyday, ordinary items that you can find in your kitchen to demonstrate simple scientific principles. Activities include: Blobs in a Bottle, Strawberry DNA Extraction, and Rapid Color Changing Chemistry. Audience: Grades 6-8 teachers Format: Interactive, Hands-On B17 Dealing with Difficult People Facilitated by Gayle Denny Have someone in your life you consider challenging or difficult? Whether it's a child in your class, the parent of a child in your class, a co-worker, your supervisor or employee, or someone in your personal life, difficult people make life, well, DIFFICULT! While you can't change the other person, this workshop will give you some tools and techniques to help diffuse difficult situations and communicate more effectively (and hopefully with less drama). This workshop is designed to give participants an overview of crowdfunding, as well as step-by-step direction for how you can take advantage of what a crowdfunding platform has to offer and integrate it into your school’s fundraising initiatives.
